The launch of the Eclipsa Audio certification program, administered by HDR10+ Technologies LLC, marks a significant step forward in the immersive audio landscape. Built upon the Immersive Audio Model and Format (IAMF) open-source specifications from the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), this program aims to ensure consistent immersive audio performance across compatible devices, including televisions and next-generation gadgets.
IAMF is designed to optimize the immersive listening experience across various applications, such as music streaming, gaming, augmented and virtual reality, and traditional broadcasting. It enables content creators and distribution platforms to deliver high-quality spatial audio with efficient encoding and flexible rendering, adapting to diverse playback conditions. The royalty-free license and codec-agnostic nature of IAMF, along with its accessible reference software decoder and test streams on AOMedia’s GitHub, facilitate widespread adoption and innovation.
Matt Frost, chairman of AOMedia’s steering committee, emphasized the importance of robust device testing and maximum compliance to make immersive audio as accessible as other digital experiences. HDR10+ Technologies LLC, known for its expertise in dynamic metadata video formats, has been tasked with administering the Eclipsa Audio program, leveraging its experience and global testing facilities.
As consumers increasingly invest in immersive big-screen televisions, the demand for high-performance spatial sound that complements HDR video quality has surged. Bill Mandel, co-manager of HDR10+ Technologies, highlighted the opportunity to “complete the picture” by unifying sight and sound for total immersive entertainment. The Eclipsa Audio certification program will initially focus on televisions, with other devices to follow. The royalty-free licensing agreement and technical specifications are now available to partners, and the first certified devices are expected to hit the market shortly.
