AI Advances Privacy in Speech Tech with Pseudo Speakers

In the world of speech technology, privacy is a growing concern. Speaker anonymization is a technique designed to address this issue by concealing speaker-specific attributes in speech signals. This makes the anonymized speech unlinkable to the original speaker’s identity. Recent approaches to speaker anonymization involve disentangling speech into content and speaker components, and then replacing the speaker component with pseudo speakers.

There are two main strategies for mapping anonymized speech. The first involves mapping all utterances to a common pseudo speaker, while the second maps each utterance to a distinct pseudo speaker. A recent study, conducted by researchers Kong Aik Lee, Zeyan Liu, Liping Chen, and Zhenhua Ling, investigated the impact of these mapping strategies on three key dimensions: speaker linkability, dispersion in the anonymized speaker space, and de-identification from the original identity.

The findings of the study were clear. Using distinct pseudo speakers for each utterance increased speaker dispersion and reduced linkability compared to using a common pseudo speaker. This suggests that the distinct pseudo speaker approach may be more effective in preserving privacy.

The researchers introduced a conceptual framework called the pinhole effect to explain the relationship between mapping strategies and anonymization performance. The hypothesis was validated through empirical evaluation, providing a solid foundation for future research in this area.
